In every occupation there are a select few who give a bad name to others in that field. In the police profession, there are “rotten apples” too. For more information, read Honest Cops Get Bad Reputation.
The rotten apples are the ones that do not belong in their particular line of work. This holds true with bad police officers. The few examples following show some officers who should not be wearing a police uniform.
These police officers disgrace and shame their fellow officers, superiors, and communities, not to mention their families; the officers' wives, children, and other family members.
For example, a Miami, Fl police officer was charged with animal cruelty and another offense after he kicked a police dog into unconsciousness, according to The Police News. The incident is said to have occurred after “Duke,” a 4-year-old German Shepherd, barked (when he shouldn't have) during a training exercise at the Miami Dade Training Bureau.
The officer, “lost it,” a source of Local 10 Florida said. The officer, a 27-year police veteran and 25-year canine officer was arrested after the dog collapsed. Duke was rushed to an animal clinic by the officer after he shook the dog and realized that Duke was unconscious. The dog later died at the clinic.
The officer has been placed on administrative duty with pay since the investigation began.
In another recent case reported by The Police News, officers in Austin, TX were disciplined for Internet Misuse after they were caught viewing sexually explicit websites at work.
The discipline included a detective being demoted to the rank of police officer and suspended for 45 days. A sergeant was taken off the streets for 30 days and had his chances of an upcoming promotion taken away from him. Another sergeant received a 45-day suspension for looking at non-work related sites. The officer allegedly accessed inappropriate material on Myspace and Craigslist. The fourth man, a police officer, was given a five-day suspension for forwarding an email with a pornographic image attached to his personal account.
The attorney representing the officers felt the discipline was harsh.
An angry city councilman in a Detroit suburb has vowed to investigate after learning that no charges were filed against a police officer and his wife, who together, ate marijuana-tainted brownies.
The Police News said the officer called 911 and told the dispatcher he thought he and his wife were dying from an overdose. At first, the officer told investigators that his wife took the marijuana from his police vehicle while he slept, but later recanted his story and admitted that he took the marijuana from the vehicle himself and put it into the brownie mix. The officer has since resigned from the department.
